Beverly Kaufman Scholarship 

Beverly Kaufman served as County Clerk of Harris County for nearly 17 years. She received numerous professional accolades throughout her career, typifying the ideal woman professional in government. In recognition of Ms. Kaufman's excellence in public service, WPG proudly presents a $1,000 scholarship for an outstanding woman who is currently pursuing studies at the University of Houston; preparing for a career in public service or furthering her education to enhance her existing public administration position. Full-time or part-time graduate and under-graduate students who plan to apply their studies to the local community as public servants are eligible to apply. The winner of the scholarship will also receive a one-year membership to WPG.

 Candidates must be female residents of the Greater Houston area and students in good standing at the University of Houston, UH-Clear Lake or UH-Downtown. Graduate applicants must have completed at least 12 graduate hours and undergraduates must have completed at least 30 hours.

Applications are due by February 15, 2012.

2011 WPG Scholarship Recipient

Charlotte Brown
Rice University
Major – Mathematical Economics
Freshman

 

Charlotte Brown sees public service as the ability to change her country. She is studying mathematical economics to obtain the skills to fully understand public policy. She is also taking political science classes for a context to apply these skills.

 

She is involved in campus government as the cultural committee chair for the 2011-2012 academic year. Charlotte is also an active participant in the Baker Institute of Public Policy. She has served as a US Senate Page and as an intern for US Senator George Lemieux of Florida.

 

At such a young age, Charlotte has gained valuable experience that is preparing her for an exemplary career in public service.

 

Congratulations to the 2010 Beverly Kaufman Scholarship Winner

Sonerka Mouton, married to Patrick Mouton, mother of three Christi- 20 Justus-9 and Yanna-7. She is currently a servant leader at Royal High School as the first year assistant principal in Brookshire, TX. She previously served as the Business Education Teacher for the high school. This is her 7th year in the district. She has also worked as an adjunct professor at Texas Southern University teaching business classes. Currently, Sonerka is pursuing her doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of Houston. Her dissertation topic reflects her passion of closing the gender gap in administrative positions her title reads Exploring Relationships Between Secondary School Principal Gender and Campus Ratings In Texas Accountability System.

 

Anticipated graduation date is May 13, 2011.
