2006-2007 Winner of the Inaugural Beverly Kaufman $1,000 Scholarship

Just one month after receiving the inaugural Beverly Kaufman Scholarship award, County Judge Robert Eckels announced his resignation and the world, as I knew it, dramatically changed.  I am continuing my studies toward
a degree in Communications at the University of Houston Downtown and still hope to utilize it in a public service career, either with the new County Judge Ed Emmett or some other Harris County entity.

I was also named a Red Rose Scholar at the University of Houston Downtown, which is a great honor. Red Rose Scholars are nominated by faculty for outstanding academic achievement. I will receive $3,000 for the 2007-08 academic year from the Red Rose Scholarship, and combined with the Beverly Kaufman Scholarship award, will have books and tuition covered for the entire school year. Not having to worry about how to pay for my education has helped alleviate the other stressors in my life of late.

Thank you, WPG.

“I am deeply honored that Dr. Peter and Theresa Chang have created this scholarship to recognize my work in public service.  It is fitting that the scholarship be awarded to a UH student since Mrs. Chang is a former UH Regent , my husband was a graduate of the University, and I serve on the UH Center for Public Policy Advisory Board.  I selected WPG for the conduit to award the scholarship because I am a past president and our membership is very representative of women in public service in the Houston area.”

 --Beverly Kaufman, Harris County Clerk

Beverly Kaufman, elected to the office of County Clerk by the citizens of Harris County, has received numerous professional accolades throughout her career, typifying the ideal woman professional in government. In recognition of Beverly Kaufman’s excellence in public service, Women Professionals in Government proudly announces a $1,000 scholarship award for an outstanding woman who is currently pursuing studies at the University of Houston, contemplating a public servant’s career, or furthering her education to enhance her existing public administration position.

The primary objective of the Beverly Kaufman Scholarship is to assist exceptional women dedicated to the pursuit of public service careers. Full-time or part-time graduate or undergraduate students, who plan to apply their studies toward a meaningful contribution to the local community as public servants, are eligible. The winner of the scholarship will also be given a complimentary membership in WPG, affording excellent networking opportunities with established women professionals in government.

Candidates must be female residents of the Greater Houston area and students in good standing at the University of Houston, UH Clear Lake, or UH Downtown. Graduate applicants must have completed at least 12 graduate hours, and undergraduate applicants must have completed at least 30 undergraduate hours at the University of Houston. Determination of the award will depend on the applicant’s professional and scholastic achievements, demonstrated community service, reasons for pursuing a public service career, challenges to future professional and scholastic achievement, and scholarship need.
