Women Professionals in Government, WPG, was founded in 1981 by Mary Dipboye a graduate of the University of Houston with a Masters Degree in Public Administration. After taking a government relations job at Houston Lighting & Power (now Reliant Energy), she decided to form an organization for women with careers in government. The organization would offer a network to provide knowledge, skills, and support for career growth.
WPG currently meets on the first Thursday of the month, September thru May, to network, enjoy lunch, and hear an outstanding community leader. The meetings are open to city, county, state, and federal professional women, as well as men, who work in or with government.
In 2006, WPG became a 501c3 organization. WPG provides scholarship opportunities through the Beverly Kaufman and WPG scholarships to young women pursuing degrees in government and public policy. In addition to the scholarships WPG provides grant funding to agencies serving women and/or children. In May, WPG hosts a Summer Social to raise scholarship funds.
